Luke Johnson

Journalist

I am a Berlin-based journalist. I cover politics, culture, and economics from Berlin to Moscow, with a special focus on the War in Ukraine and its regional aftereffects.

In covering Eastern Europe since the early 2010s, I have interviewed public figures such as Alexei Navalny and a Ukrainian writer held captive in a Russian-separatist prison, and reported on Ukrainians coming back to their home country to volunteer and fight, and an illegal opposition protest in Moscow. In 2022, my reporting took me to Poland and Ukraine.

I have written for a variety of outlets. My book reviews have appeared in print for The Parliament Magazine and my commentary in the Washington Post Opinions section. My reporting and analysis has also been published by The New Republic, Fortune, The Daily Beast, Medium, and Al-Jazeera America. I write a regular column for Internationale Politik Quarterly, published by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), and also have been the site’s social media editor. I write a newsletter called Public Sphere (publicsphere.news) on the decline of democracy across the globe.
